"CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME AND THEN SPREADS

ABROAD"

B. Hammonds

I found myself one day sitting and asking myself, “am I my brother’s keeper?” I have raised three children to be grown and they lived a very nice secure life with their father and I. But so many children today in our cities do not experience or have the same fortune or blessings that my children or your children may have shared. In 1983 I stumbled across a news article that explained emancipated children and I had not ever thought of what happens to them once they turn eighteen years old. The article began to explain how they were basically put out on the streets to fend for themselves if they did not meet extremely strict requirements. Many children cannot meet all of the requirements without a little parental type guidance. This is creating another problem for our country and the homeless situation. Where do the emancipated children go who don’t meet the qualifications or when they have no positive options before them? Many of these same children have to return to the prior abusive family environments that the Welfare Department had rescued them from as babies or adolescents. They either returned to their parent or guardians homes, turned to drugs, teenage pregnancy or fathering as a means to get back into the Welfare system, and believe it or not many chose death. Teenage suicide is running rampant in our country. I thought about my own children and realized they could not have survived at eighteen on their own with all these decisions and challenges to be faced. Even still though I just could not understand this and so I turned a blinded eye to this condition. Someone else will deal with it not me. I have over thirty years of experience of working with young people and I have several godchildren in different cities. It was not until one of them a girl who had been in and out of the Welfare system on her eighteenth birthday hopped on a Greyhound Bus from Bakersfield, California and arrived on my doorstep in Los Angeles trying to escape. She could not meet the requirements of the system because she was illiterate and embarrassed. She could not read and had very little understanding. She is a high school graduate. I have to question, however, how you can graduate from High School in the United States of America and not be able to read or write? Her parents and grand parents are drug abusers and the grandfather has molested all of his daughters and grand daughters. When she arrived she was tired, hungry, sad and dirty, just the prettiest lost little soul I have ever seen. Well I guess you see I am my brother’s keeper. I could no longer keep my eyes closed and the article clipping now yellow with time that I had carried for so many years is my calling and destination in this life.

This group helps young people who have come out of abusive homes, get re-grounded spiritually, emotionally, & mentally before they are sent out into the world to survive on their own without the love and tools they need to be effective and happy human beings. A VERY worth while cause, if you are looking to give where your money WILL have a direct and immediate affect on someone's life.

I have to ask the Father to forgive me. He told me several months ago to tithe into Emancipation Homes And I have been slothful. I promise to stop procrastinating and get on with it... Love you & thanks for your constant obedience... :)

I am disabled and I have been trying to get my Drivers License back that was wrongfully suspended. My friends at Ambassadors have taken me to get legal assistance and driven me back and forth as my Advocate. I have a learning disability and sometimes people don't understand what I say, they kept me from being embarrassed. They have helped me

so much. I finally got a letter saying I will have my license back real soon.
